About frontier rustic designs

Building a life for a new frontier…

Phil and Lisa Nye were the original owners of Frontier Rustic Designs, a business born out of Lisa’s passion for gardening and Phil’s skilled craftsmanship. When Lisa originally asked her husband to build a greenhouse, she wanted it to withstand Western Montana’s high winds and temperature drops while also being visually charming. After 20 years of running a family-owned business and hundreds of custom-built greenhouses, the Nyes had honed their design skills and created a model that serves as the foundation for all Frontier Rustic Designs builds to this day.

During their busy season, the couple received assistance from twin brothers Jesse and Joe Esh, who welcomed Montana’s retreat from their fast-paced lives in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The brothers added their construction background to Phil’s designs and fell in love with Montana's vast landscapes. They even brought their girlfriends along, hoping to ignite the same passion for this life as a new frontier.

In 2019, Phil and Lisa presented an opportunity to the Esh brothers to take over the business. Impressed by their care and craftsmanship and ready to move on to another adventure, the couple felt the time was right to pass the torch. Jesse and Mary Beth Esh were the first to make the jump, moving to Montana right after their wedding in the spring of 2020. MaryBeth's skills in customer experience quickly became an asset to Lisa as she assisted clients with design layouts. The Eshes were also excited to learn a new addition was coming to their team - a baby boy! The Esh family embraced the Montana lifestyle wholeheartedly. Two years later, Joe and his wife Martha followed suit and joined them in Montana, solidifying the transition of Frontier Rustic Designs to a new generation.

Today, Frontier Rustic Designs remains a small, family-owned business rooted in the belief that function can, and should be, combined with beauty. Each greenhouse is crafted from the finest Cedar and Douglas Fir, wood that is meticulously processed and cut right here in our workshop. From window panes to the smallest of details like sturdy door knobs, we select materials known for their exceptional quality and durability. In recent years, our greenhouses have been built to help people enjoy extended gardening, use as an art studio, gathering spaces, or simply, a sanctuary for daily retreat.

With a commitment to craftsmanship and a deep love for Montana's landscapes, the Esh family proudly carries on the legacy of Frontier Rustic Designs. We continue to build structures that embody the strength and resilience necessary to endure the elements of Southwestern Montana and beyond. Our passion lies in creating functional and beautiful spaces that harmonize with nature, allowing our clients to commune with the great outdoors in comfort and style.
